Textbooks and academic references for Filipino learners

PJEAR

About the journal

A peer-reviewed, open-access journal for action research by Filipino teachers, school leaders and education practitioners: studies that start from a real problem of practice and show, with evidence, what changed.

Aims and scope

The Philippine Journal of Educational Action Research (PJEAR) publishes action research carried out by teachers, school heads, education supervisors and other practitioners in Philippine schools, learning centres and teacher-education institutions. Its aim is to make good practice visible: to share studies that begin with a real problem in a classroom or school, test a deliberate response to it, and report honestly what happened.

PJEAR values research that is rigorous and useful. Every article should help another practitioner decide whether, and how, to try something similar in their own setting. The journal welcomes first-time authors and gives them clear, constructive feedback.

Manuscripts may be written in English or in Filipino.

PJEAR welcomes completed action research from Philippine basic, higher and alternative education, including:

  • Classroom action research on teaching, learning and assessment
  • Interventions for reading, numeracy and learning recovery
  • School-based and collaborative action research (e.g. through LAC sessions)
  • Inclusive education, learner support and well-being programs
  • School leadership, management and improvement initiatives
  • Participatory and community-linked action research
  • Teacher professional development and reflective practice

Peer review

Every manuscript first receives an editorial screening for fit, completeness and originality. Suitable manuscripts are then sent for double-blind peer review to at least two reviewers, usually one experienced practitioner and one researcher.

Reviewers look for a clearly described problem of practice, a well-reasoned intervention, a complete action research cycle (plan, act, observe, reflect), appropriate data from more than one source, honest discussion of results and limitations, and practical implications for other practitioners. Authors receive written feedback, and first-time authors are supported through revision.

Open access

PJEAR provides immediate open access to all of its content. Articles can be read, downloaded and shared free of charge, without subscription, so that practitioners in every school can use the findings.

Publication fee

PJEAR charges a flat publication fee of PHP 1,500 (₱1,500) per accepted article. The fee is charged only after a manuscript has been accepted for publication. There is no submission fee and no peer-review fee.

Readers pay nothing: every published article is free to read, download and share, with no subscription or access charges.

Authors retain the copyright of their work and grant the journal the right to publish it first. Articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0), which allows reuse with proper acknowledgment of the authors and of the original publication in PJEAR.

Language of publication

PJEAR publishes articles in English and in Filipino. Manuscripts may be written in either language, and both are reviewed and published on equal terms. Each article is published in the language in which it was written; the title, abstract and keywords appear in that language.

Recommendation: authors who write in Filipino are encouraged to also provide an English abstract, so that the work can reach readers and indexing services outside the Philippines. This is a recommendation, not a requirement.

Publication ethics

Action research involves people the researcher teaches, leads or works with, so PJEAR asks authors to take particular care. Studies with learners need informed consent from parents or guardians and the learners' own assent; participation must be voluntary, and declining must have no effect on grades or treatment. Authors should obtain the permissions required by their school, division or institution before collecting data, and should state these in the manuscript.

Participants, schools and communities must not be identifiable unless they have agreed in writing. Personal data must be handled in line with the Data Privacy Act of 2012. Manuscripts must be original, must cite all sources and must not be under review elsewhere. Any use of generative AI tools in preparing the manuscript must be disclosed. Plagiarism, data fabrication and other misconduct lead to rejection or retraction.

Archiving

The journal is committed to the long-term preservation of its content. Details of its digital preservation arrangements will be announced on this page.

Indexing and abstracting

The journal aims to be indexed in recognized academic databases and repositories, including Google Scholar and the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
